🔥🖤 ZZ Plant ‘Black Queen’ / Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Black Queen’ (zam-ee-oh-KUL-kas zam-ee-FOH-lee-ah) 🖤🔥
Also known as: Black ZZ Plant, Raven ZZ (sometimes confused, but distinct cultivar)
This dramatic cultivar of the ZZ plant is loved for its near-black foliage. New growth emerges bright green and gradually hardens off to a deep, glossy purple-black, creating a stunning contrast. Like all ZZ plants, ‘Black Queen’ is tough, drought-tolerant, and thrives on neglect — but with a gothic, modern twist that makes it a collector’s dream.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Adapts to low, medium, or bright indirect light. Bright light brings out deeper black tones, while low light slows growth. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch leaves.
💧 Water – Extremely drought-tolerant. Water deeply, then allow soil to dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.
🌡️ Humidity – Tolerates average household humidity. Prefers temps between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from prolonged cold below 50°F (10°C).
🌱 Growth – Slow to moderate grower. Upright, architectural stems with arching, glossy leaflets. Mature plants can reach 2–3 feet indoors.
📊 Difficulty: Very Easy / Beginner-Friendly (low-maintenance, thrives on neglect).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth and stomach irritation. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Tip:
For the darkest, richest black foliage, provide bright indirect light and lean watering. Dust leaves occasionally to keep their sheen and enhance the dramatic contrast between green new growth and mature black leaves.
