🔥🌿 Variegated Devil’s Backbone / Euphorbia tithymaloides (yoo-FOR-bee-uh tith-ee-MAY-loid-eez) 🌿🔥
Also known as: Zigzag Plant, Redbird Cactus (not a true cactus), Slipper Plant, Jacob’s Ladder
This quirky succulent shrub gets its name from the zigzagging, ladder-like stems that zig left and right as they grow. The variegated form has creamy-white and green leaves often flushed with pink or red, especially in bright light. Native to tropical regions of Central America and the Caribbean, it adds personality and whimsy to any collection.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Thrives in bright, indirect to direct light. Strong light enhances pink/red tones in the variegation. Indoors, a sunny window works well.
💧 Water – Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Drought-tolerant once established, but avoid overwatering as it is prone to root rot.
🌡️ Humidity – Prefers average household humidity and warm temps between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts.
🌱 Growth – Moderate grower. Can reach 2–3 feet indoors, taller outdoors in tropical climates. Upright, zigzag stems produce small variegated leaves along the ridges.
📊 Difficulty: Easy (adaptable, drought-tolerant, and thrives on neglect).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Like many Euphorbias, it produces a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and is poisonous if eaten. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Tip:
To maximize colorful variegation, give plenty of bright light. Always handle with care — wear gloves when pruning or repotting, as the latex sap can cause skin irritation.
