🔥💎 Succulent ‘String of Pearls’ / Senecio rowleyanus (sen-EE-shee-oh row-lee-AN-us) 💎🔥
Also known as: String of Beads, String of Marbles, Rosary Vine
This whimsical trailing succulent is instantly recognizable for its cascading strands of pea-like green pearls. Each “pearl” is actually a modified leaf, storing water and featuring tiny translucent “windows” that let light inside to boost photosynthesis. A true conversation piece, it spills dramatically from hanging baskets like living jewelry.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Bright, indirect light indoors, or partial sun outdoors. Prefers 6–8 hours of light daily. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the pearls.
💧 Water – Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Overwatering quickly leads to root and stem rot. In winter, reduce watering further.
🌡️ Humidity – Prefers dry to average household air. Does best in temps of 65–80°F (18–27°C) and should be protected from frost.
🌱 Growth – Fast-growing trailing succulent, with strands reaching 2–3 feet long indoors. Can be easily propagated from cuttings by laying pearls on top of soil.
📊 Difficulty: Intermediate (needs careful watering — sensitive to overwatering and low light).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains sap that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy in pets. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Tip:
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, and always plant in a container with drainage holes. For fuller growth, coil strands onto the soil surface to encourage new roots and additional vines.
