🔥 Rhaphidophora ‘Hayi’ / Rhaphidophora hayi (rah-FID-oh-for-uh HAY-eye)
Also known as: Shingle Plant, Shingle Vine
Rhaphidophora ‘Hayi’ is a fascinating shingling aroid with small, oval, deep green leaves that lie flat against any vertical surface they climb. Native to Queensland, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, it naturally creeps up tree trunks and branches, forming a living mosaic of overlapping foliage. Indoors, it brings a unique architectural vibe — like a leafy green tile wall that grows before your eyes.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Prefers bright, indirect light. Too little light can cause slow growth and sparse leaves, while too much direct sun may scorch its delicate foliage.
💧 Water – Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Requires good drainage.
🌡️ Humidity – Thrives in high humidity (60%+). Dry air may cause leaves to crisp or detach from their climbing surface. Ideal temps: 65–85°F (18–29°C).
🌱 Growth – True shingler. Needs a rough vertical support (wood board, moss pole, or cork bark) to show off its signature overlapping leaf growth. Without a surface, it tends to trail loosely instead of shingling.
📊 Difficulty: Intermediate (easy to keep alive, but special care needed for its signature shingle look).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals which can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Tip:
To get that “living wall” effect, mount your hayi on a wooden plank or cork board from day one. Once it latches, it will climb flush and create a gorgeous leafy patchwork. Pair it with a humidifier for the flattest, glossiest shingles — and consider mounting several together to build a true indoor green wall.
