π₯πΏ Monstera deliciosa (mon-STER-ah de-liss-ee-OH-sah) πΏπ₯
Also known as: Swiss Cheese Plant, Mexican Breadfruit, Split-leaf Philodendron (though not a true Philodendron)
The ultimate statement plant, Monstera deliciosa is famous for its huge, glossy leaves that develop dramatic splits and fenestrations (natural holes) as it matures. Native to Central American rainforests, this climbing aroid brings instant jungle vibes indoors and can grow into a bold architectural centerpiece.
π‘ Care Tips:
βοΈ Light β Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates medium light but may produce smaller, less-split leaves. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch foliage.
π§ Water β Water when the top 2 inches of soil dry out. Prefers evenly moist soil but not soggy conditions. Allow excess water to drain freely.
π‘οΈ Humidity β Thrives in moderate to high humidity (60%+). Average household humidity is usually fine, but extra humidity boosts lush growth. Keep temps between 65β85Β°F (18β29Β°C).
π± Growth β A vigorous climber that can reach several feet indoors. Provide a moss pole or sturdy support for larger, fenestrated leaves. Repot every 1β2 years as roots expand.
π Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate (forgiving, but needs space and occasional pruning).
πΎ Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
π Collectorβs Tip:
The fenestrations (splits and holes) appear as the plant matures and climbs β young plants have solid leaves. For the best leaf size and dramatic holes, provide a moss pole and bright, indirect light.
