🔥🌿 Philodendron cordatum (kor-DAY-tum) 🌿🔥
Also known as: Heartleaf Philodendron, Cordatum, Sweetheart Plant
This trailing or climbing charmer has glossy, heart-shaped emerald leaves that drape beautifully—or scale trellises if you let it climb. It's graceful, forgiving, and perfect for those wanting lush greenery without constant babysitting.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates lower light (but growth will slow), and avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch leaves.
💧 Water – Water when the top inch (or so) of soil feels dry; don’t let it sit in soggy soil to prevent root rot. In lower light, allow maybe a bit more drying before watering.
🌡️ Humidity – Prefers warm temps around 65-80°F (18-27°C). Likes moderate to higher humidity; spray mist, pebble tray, or humidifier helps. Can tolerate average indoor humidity but perks up with more.
🌱 Growth – Vining growth habit. You can let it trail from baskets or support it to climb. Prune to encourage bushier growth. Repot every 2-3 years or when root bound.
📊 Difficulty: Easy / Beginner-friendly (tolerant of varying light, forgiving if you forget a watering now and then).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals which can irritate mouth, throat, and stomach in pets or humans. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Tip:
Although often confused with Philodendron hederaceum or other heartleaf types, P. cordatum is its own species (native to parts of SE coastal Brazil). To get really rich foliage, give it indirect light + humidity, and allow it to climb or trail freely so its growth habit shows off.
