🔥 Monstera ‘Dubia’ / Monstera dubia (mon-STER-ah DOO-bee-ah)

Also known as: Shingle Plant, Shingling Monstera

One of the most unique Monsteras, Monstera dubia is a rare climber famous for its “shingling” growth habit. Its small, heart-shaped leaves press flat against the surface it climbs, overlapping like shingles on a roof. Juvenile foliage is green with silvery variegation, while mature plants may eventually develop larger fenestrated leaves if allowed to climb tall enough in the right conditions.

💡 Care Tips:

☀️ Light – Bright, indirect light is best. Too little light slows growth and reduces silvery markings. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch delicate leaves.
💧 Water – Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Likes consistent moisture but never soggy soil. Ensure excellent drainage.
🌡️ Humidity – Thrives in high humidity (60%+). Dry air may cause browning or curling. Best in temps of 65–85°F (18–29°C).
🌱 Growth – Slow to moderate grower. Juvenile plants stay small and shingling; with maturity and climbing support, leaves can transition to larger, fenestrated Monstera-style foliage.

📊 Difficulty: Intermediate (not overly fussy, but needs steady humidity and support to thrive).

🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that may irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.

🌟 Collector’s Tip:
Provide a textured climbing surface like cork bark or a wooden board to encourage the signature shingling effect. Keep humidity high to prevent leaf edges from crisping and to maintain vibrant silver patterns.
