๐ฅ๐ค Ludisia discolor / Ludisia discolor (loo-DEE-see-uh DIS-kol-or) ๐ค๐ฅ
Also known as: Jewel Orchid, Haemaria discolor
Unlike most orchids grown for their blooms, the Ludisia discolor is adored for its velvety, dark leaves streaked with shimmering veins of gold, pink, or red. Its foliage glows like embroidered velvet under the light, making it a true jewel among houseplants. Though its flowers are small and white, they arrive in delicate sprays, offering a graceful contrast to the dramatic foliage.
๐ก Care Tips:
โ๏ธ Light โ Prefers low to medium indirect light. Direct sun can scorch its velvety leaves, while too little light may slow growth.
๐ง Water โ Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Let the top half-inch dry slightly before watering again. Use well-draining, airy orchid or aroid mix.
๐ก๏ธ Humidity โ Thrives in moderate to high humidity (60%+). Leaves can crisp in dry air. Best in temps of 65โ80ยฐF (18โ27ยฐC). Protect from sudden cold drafts.
๐ฑ Growth โ Terrestrial orchid (grows in soil, not bark). Stays compact and low, typically under 12 inches tall. Produces small clusters of white flowers in winter.
๐ Difficulty: Intermediate (forgiving compared to most orchids, but prefers steady humidity and moisture).
๐พ Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs. All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
๐ Collectorโs Tip:
Think of this as the โgoth jewelโ of the orchid world. It wonโt tower or demand bright light like other orchids โ instead, it thrives in cozy, shaded nooks. For maximum shimmer, give it a soft grow light or place where natural light highlights its velvet veins.
