ππΏ Anthurium crystallinum πΏπ
(pronounced βan-THUR-ee-um kris-tal-EE-numβ)
Also known as Crystal Anthurium or Velvet Heart Anthurium.
Native to the cloud forests of Central and South America, Anthurium crystallinum is a breathtaking species adored for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves traced with shimmering silver veins. The deep emerald surface glows when light hits it, revealing a rich texture that looks almost metallic. Each new leaf unfurls a bronze tint before maturing to its signature jewel-green sheen, creating an ever-changing display of elegance and texture.
π‘ Care Tips:
βοΈ Light β Bright, indirect light enhances the contrast of the silver veins. Avoid direct sun, which can fade or burn the velvet surface.
π§ Water β Keep the substrate evenly moist but never soggy. Let the top inch (2β3 cm) dry before watering again. Use filtered or rainwater if possible.
π‘οΈ Humidity β Thrives in 70β90 % humidity. Benefits from a humidifier, greenhouse cabinet, or enclosed terrarium setup.
π± Growth β Terrestrial epiphyte with a compact root system. Mature leaves typically reach 8β12 inches (20β30 cm) long but can grow larger in ideal tropical conditions. Slow to moderate growth, depending on humidity and stability.
π Difficulty: Intermediate (prefers stable humidity and consistent care)
πΎ Pet Safety: Mildly toxic if ingested; may cause stomach upset. All pets are unique, and symptoms can vary in presentation or severity.
π Collectorβs Tip
Anthurium crystallinum is sometimes confused with A. clarinervium, but crystallinumβs leaves are thinner, more elongated, and have a subtle translucent shimmer. It loves airy mixes of sphagnum moss, perlite, and orchid bark, and appreciates gentle airflow to prevent moisture buildup. With care, it rewards you with long-lasting velvet leaves that look like sculpted emerald glass.
