🔥🖤 Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’ (al-oh-KAY-sha “Black Vel-vet”) 🖤🔥
Also known as: Alocasia Black Velvet, Black Velvet Elephant Ear, “Little Queen” (reginula = “little queen”).
Black Velvet is a jewel alocasia with leaves so dark they appear almost black, highlighted by sharp silvery-white veins. Its plush, velvety texture and compact form make it feel regal and exotic—like holding a luxury collectible in miniature.
💡 Care Tips:
☀️ Light – Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch and fade its dark contrast.
💧 Water – Water when the top inch of soil dries; never let it sit in soggy soil. Excellent drainage is essential.
💧 Water – Alocasia love consistency! Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 1-2 inches to dry between watering.
🌡️ Humidity – Thrives in 60%+ humidity and warm temps; dislikes cold drafts or dry air.
🌱 Growth – Very compact, usually under 18″ tall; leaves can reach 4–6″ long. Slow grower compared to other alocasias.
📊 Difficulty: Intermediate–High (sensitive to overwatering and low humidity).
🐾 Pet Safety: Toxic if ingested (can cause mouth irritation, swelling, or stomach upset). All pets are unique and reactions may vary in symptoms and severity.
🌟 Collector’s Fun Fact::
This plant is actually a cultivar of Alocasia reginula, which is native to the island of Borneo (Southeast Asia). In the wild, it grows in limestone-rich forest floors, where the soil is naturally alkaline compared to most rainforest plants. → This is why Black Velvet is more sensitive to acidic soils than other alocasias.
The leaves feel velvety because of tiny surface cells called papillae. These scatter light and reduce leaf temperature, helping the plant survive in low-light understory conditions.
